The velvet lounge

Recently I upholstered a custom made bay window diamond buttoned back lounge. The client had the custom made wooden frame already made. She gave me a brief with some photos to indicate what style and design she wanted for the finished product. She chose a beautiful velvet from Westbury Textiles from Lizzo. A beautiful soft grey colour with lots of warmth.

Here are some process photos to show you the work that went into just the back of this lounge. This first step was to attach the first layer of back foam. The top edge was chamfered to start creating a smooth curve on top of the back.

The next step was to add another layer of foam that wrapped over the top and stapled to attach. Because of the shape of this lounge, the layer of foam is in 3 pieces to allow it to wrap around the unusual shape.

The next process was to mark out the diamond button pattern and holesaw drill out the holes for the buttons to be pulled through.

And here is the finished lounge. Including a loose seat cushion with piped edge that can be reversed.

Here is the lounge in place at the clients house under the bay window. Creating a cozy and luxurious spot to be.

Watch this timelapse video to see the process of attaching the buttons and fabric to create the diamond buttoned back. This timelapse goes over 2 days. You might notice I have a cast on my arm due to a mountain biking injury. Luckily I was still able to do this lounge. And I had the help of Lauren, a casual employee while I was completing this project. Which was very helpful especially due to the size of this lounge. Usually I am working from on top of a bench, but with the size of this lounge, it was easier to work on the ground where I had easy access to both sides of the back. Especially during the buttoning process.

To install the lounge on location, the seat base was carried in seperately and then we had to bolt the seat to the back inside. This was due to the weight of the frame. I also had Dom, Krista and Kelly helping me deliver and install this project. So a big thankyou goes out to them too.
